We are delighted to welcome physio Aarie Verwey to the team at Beyond Health Parsons Green. He has taken the time out from treating clients to explain how a bad back injury inspired his career in physiotherapy, his tips for workout prep and what his go-to smoothie is.

What made you want to be a physiotherapist?

I had a severe back injury that stopped me from playing the sport I love (field hockey) at the same time that I was trying to decide what to do after finishing school. The support and guidance I received from my physiotherapist in overcoming the injury was phenomenal and turned everything around for me. This inspired me to pursue a career in physiotherapy.

How would you describe your approach to physio? 

My experience of recovering from long term and minor injuries helps me relate to experiences clients go through at each stage. Because of this, I try to offer my all to everyone and explain what I am doing to help clients understand the process.

What excites you the most about joining the Beyond Health team? 

Learning from a big team with a wide knowledge base as well as having amazing gym facilities and testing equipment available to understand what is going on without guesswork. 

Why is good physio so important? 

To help recover from injury all the way back to peak performance, not just until you feel better. This gives you the best chance of avoiding injuries in the future as well as helping you get back to living a happy healthy life.

What are your top pre-workout tips? 

Remove distractions and focus on the workout ahead of you.

And post-workout? 

Rest/relax.

What’s your favourite smoothie recipe?

Protein, raspberries, banana and oat milk.

What’s your favourite way to fuel up? 

Weetabix and banana.

What’s your favourite workout or sports/fitness event? 

Playing hockey is number one, but anything that’s long and gruelling.
